Lake Hawea in New Zealand

    Lake Hawea in New Zealand

Lake Hawea lies on the South Island of New Zealand. There are some bicycle tours of this area that attract tourists from overseas, who are able to capture some impressive photos of the lake on their travels.

Lake Hawea is named for a local Maori tribe. It sits in a resort area that is located about 50 miles east of Fiordland National Park. Some tourists choose to hire classic vans like the Volkswagen Vanagon in Christchurch from a company called Classic Campers, and embark on a self-drive tour of the area. This can be an a good way to make a New Zealand trip more affordable, since these vans can be hired for under $100 a day. They are no taller or longer than an ordinary van, but these camper vans, or "Kombi", are more fuel efficient than an RV and much easier to park.
